A veterinary practice in Kibworth keeps a Toshiba external as the off-server copy of its scanned historical records, the paper files from before the practice went digital. It stopped appearing in the file list. The IT contractor who looks after the practice tried it across several laptops, ran the tools he had, told them plainly that it needed equipment he did not have, and stopped. The practice manager rang half expecting to be told that the contractor should have got further.

Several laptops giving the same answer is a real result. It is the one experiment that can be run without specialist equipment and it eliminates an entire category: the cables, the ports, the drivers and the machines. What it cannot do is say which part of the drive has failed, because every one of those tests speaks to the drive through an interface the drive is not answering on.
The contractor did the right thing, and it is worth saying so. General IT tools work by talking to a drive that has already introduced itself. When a drive never gets that far, no amount of software is relevant, and running more of it wastes start-ups on a mechanism that has a limited number left. Recognising a boundary and handing the job on preserves the drive's remaining chances, which is a service rather than an admission.
A seized bearing is a different fault to bonded heads. Both stop the platters turning and both produce a drive that will not ready, but bonded heads release in minutes and a seized bearing does not release at all. The stack of platters has to be moved into a matched donor base, keeping their positions relative to one another exactly as they were, because the recorded tracks assume that alignment and lose all meaning without it.
The transfer is the delicate part, not the diagnosis. Once the platters are out of their original base there is no going back to check anything, so the geometry is fixed with a jig and the whole stack moves as one. It is unhurried work in clean air, it is firmly outside what the published guarantee covers, and it is the reason this kind of job is quoted with half the figure payable before it starts.
One profiled start on a current-limited supply produced the signature of a seized spindle: current straight to the limit, no rotation, no head movement, and none of the periodic retry pattern a drive shows when the motor turns but the reads fail. That distinguished it from the far more common bonded-head case before the drive was opened.
Under laminar flow the bearing was confirmed seized and would not turn by hand. A matched donor of the same model was prepared and the platter stack was transferred with its relative alignment held throughout. The surfaces were clean, having never been dragged across by a failing head. Reassembled, the drive spun properly and imaged on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA with only a small number of slow regions, and R-Studio parsed the volume with a sample of scanned records opened before release.
The scanned historical records came back complete, which mattered because the paper originals had been disposed of after the scanning project finished. The practice was advised to hold a second copy somewhere other than the same building, and the failed drive was not returned to service.
One disk is £300 + VAT. Transferring platters means opening the drive, which is mechanical work and outside the published guarantee, so 50% was settled before the work began and the balance once the records had been checked.
Take that at face value rather than as a reason to look for someone who will try harder. Recovery equipment talks to a drive below the level any operating system reaches, and a general IT setup has no route to a drive that never introduces itself. The genuinely harmful next step is to hand it to whoever is willing to keep experimenting, because each attempt spends start-ups on a mechanism that may have very few left. Tell the bench what has already been tried, honestly and including anything that was run on it, since a drive that has had a scanning tool passed over it for two hours needs a different approach to one that was unplugged after the second attempt. Post it insured, or bring it in to Cambridge on a weekday between nine and half past five.
Each of these is a real enquiry, taken from a household or a business somewhere in Leicester or the surrounding county, with the name of the customer, the firm and anything else that would identify them taken out. What is left is the reasoning: what turned up, what had actually failed inside it, the method that fault required and the equipment it was worked on. One of the thirty-six is a job that was refused, and it belongs here every bit as much as the successes do.
