A photographer working out of Ashby-de-la-Zouch runs a 2TB G-Drive Mobile as her working store between shoots. The light came on, she could hear it trying, and after two or three minutes it beeped three or four times and stopped. She had already worked through a second port, a different lead and another Mac, which is more testing than most people do, and got the same result on all of them. A wedding delivered that month was still on it.

A beep is a report from the motor, not from the data. Every drive has a small routine that tries to bring the platters up to speed, checks whether it got there, and tries again if it did not. On a good many models that retry is audible as a short tone. Hearing it means the electronics are alive, the supply is adequate and the instruction is being issued; what is missing is the movement it asks for.
Her own testing did real diagnostic work. Two ports, two cables and two computers is enough to rule out the whole host side of the problem. People are often told that this proves nothing, and that is unfair: it proves a great deal. It just does not narrow down which part of the drive is at fault, because that question cannot be answered from outside the casing.
The gap between hearing something and getting nothing is where the fault lives. A drive that is completely dead is silent. A drive that is working is silent too, after the first second or so. Sustained audible effort followed by a tone is the signature of a mechanism under load, and load on a stationary spindle is the one state that is actively expensive to prolong.
Repeating it is the only real risk she controlled. Each attempt puts torque through a head stack resting on the platter surface. Do it a handful of times and nothing much happens. Do it for an evening, hoping it will free itself, and the sliders begin to abrade the very layer the pictures are recorded in. She stopped after the second evening, which is why this ended well.
Nothing was plugged in on arrival. The disk came out of its enclosure and went onto a current-limited supply, which lets one start-up be recorded as a curve rather than repeated as an experiment. The trace showed a stall: current climbing to the limit and staying there, with no step down to a running speed.
Under laminar flow the cause was visible under magnification. The heads had settled onto the platter and bonded there during a long spell of storage in a warm car boot, which is common and is not the same as damage. They were lifted clear with a ramp tool, the surfaces beneath them checked across the full radius and found unmarked, and the mechanism turned freely afterwards. Imaging ran on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA with the head map monitored, and the shoot folders were located in R-Studio and viewed as pictures rather than counted as a total.
The delivered wedding came back complete and so did four months of unculled raw files behind it. The empty enclosure went home in the same parcel; there was never anything wrong with it, and she now uses it for a second copy rather than the only one.
A single disk is £300 + VAT. Opening one in clean air is mechanical work and falls outside the published guarantee, so 50% of the figure was settled upfront and the balance once she had the shoot in front of her.
Stop asking it. The tone is a stalled motor and every repeat loads a stationary mechanism further, which is the one form of harm an owner can do without opening anything. Freezing it is worse than useless and shaking it worse again. Send the enclosure whole rather than prising it apart, because an external in its own case travels perfectly well as it is and the bench would rather open it in controlled conditions than inherit a case someone has already levered at. Include the cable, wrap it so nothing shifts in transit, and say roughly how long it has been beeping and how many times it has been tried.
Each of these is a real enquiry, taken from a household or a business somewhere in Leicester or the surrounding county, with the name of the customer, the firm and anything else that would identify them taken out. What is left is the reasoning: what turned up, what had actually failed inside it, the method that fault required and the equipment it was worked on. One of the thirty-six is a job that was refused, and it belongs here every bit as much as the successes do.
