The Passport That Never Announced Itself

A household in Wigston had been keeping the family photographs on a WD Passport since the children were small, along with scanned certificates and years of correspondence. One evening it simply stopped registering: no drive letter, no prompt, nothing in the device list at all. A relative who is good with computers had found instructions online for taking the disk out of its case and putting it in a caddy, and was talked out of it by an hour of reading. That hour saved the job.

Reading the fault

A drive keeps its own instruction manual on its own platters. Alongside the space you can use sits a reserved area holding the firmware modules the drive needs before it can do anything: its translation tables, its defect lists, its calibration. If one of those becomes unreadable the drive stops at that point. It does not report an error, because reporting requires finishing the start-up it has just failed to finish. It simply says nothing, which is what the laptop showed.

This is why nothing appeared rather than something appearing broken. Owners reasonably expect a failing drive to turn up and misbehave. A firmware stop happens earlier than that, before any introduction has been made, so the enclosure has nothing to pass along and the computer has nothing to display. It is one of the few faults that produces a completely blank result, and it is also one of the more repairable.

On a My Passport the enclosure is not packaging. The small board inside the case, between the socket and the disk, encrypts everything on its way through as a matter of course, with the key held on that board rather than on the platters. Take the disk out and read it on a caddy and you get a full drive of noise. Nothing is broken by doing it, but nothing is readable either until the original board is reunited with the disk, and the internet is full of confident advice to shuck exactly this model.

Firmware repair is logical work and keeps the guarantee. The lid stays on, no donor parts go in, nothing is soldered. The drive is talked to below the level an operating system reaches, the damaged module is rebuilt, and the drive then behaves as it always did. That places it inside no fix, no fee. The categories the published exclusion names are a different order of work altogether.

The whole enclosure came by post with its cable, exactly as asked, and that is why the rest of the job was straightforward. The disk was brought up on PC-3000 UDMA behind a write blocker and answered in technological mode, which is the state a drive can be reached in even when it will not present itself normally. Its reserved area was read module by module, and one translation module came back corrupt while a second copy of the same module, which the drive maintains, was intact.

The damaged module was rebuilt from that copy and the drive completed its start-up on the next power cycle. It was imaged on DeepSpar in one clean pass with no weak regions at all. The image was then decrypted using the original bridge electronics that had travelled with it, the volume parsed in R-Studio, and a spread of photographs from each year opened on screen before the whole set was written to fresh media.

Everything came back: about fourteen years of photographs, the scanned certificates and a folder of letters. The drive itself was returned working, with the plain advice that a fourteen-year archive with no second copy is a risk rather than a filing system.

One disk is £300 + VAT. No fix, no fee applied here in full, because firmware and reserved-area repair are logical work, and the invoice went out after the household had looked through the recovered folders.

Why a Passport must arrive whole

Send the enclosure, the disk inside it and the cable, all together, and resist every article that tells you to prise the case open first. On a WD My Passport or My Book the encryption key sits on the small board in the enclosure rather than on the disk itself, so a bare disk read outside its own case produces nothing but noise, and a case that has been damaged during removal can turn a routine job into an unrecoverable one. The same rule covers any external drive in its own housing and any NAS unit: they travel as they are. It is only RAID sets and servers where the drives come out, labelled with their bay order and photographed in place first. If the drive has stopped registering, leave it unplugged, box it with the lead, and post it insured or bring it to the Cambridge reception between nine and half past five on a weekday.

That examination finishes two working days after the parcel is logged in — never sooner, because rushing it is how evidence gets destroyed — and it ends in one number, written down, which does not move afterwards. Where a single drive is recoverable it is generally back with you two to four working days later. How you pay turns on which kind of fault it is, and the wording does not vary across this network: no fix, no fee all jobs except electronic and mechanical failures, chip level work, DVR and Forensic jobs. So a deletion, a broken file system, a lost partition, a firmware or service-area repair all keep the guarantee — nothing comes back, nothing is owed. Opening a drive under laminar flow, rebuilding a board, lifting a memory chip, or anything that arrived wet or burnt does not: half the agreed figure is taken before the work, and the balance only if your files come home. The published figures run: £250 + VAT for a memory card, a USB stick or a pen drive; £300 + VAT for any one hard drive or SSD, NVMe included; £400 + VAT for a recorder disk or a BitLocker volume; from £500 + VAT for an array, a NAS or a server; and £800 + VAT for a forensic investigation that ends in a written report. Five bands, all of them public, and the only one outside the guarantee is the forensic work. On packing: if the storage is screwed inside a laptop, a tower, a Mac or a server, take it out and send the bare unit, because dismantling equipment is not work this bench does. Three things go the other way and travel complete — an external drive in its own case, a NAS, and a WD My Passport or My Book with its cable, since on those the key sits on the bridge rather than the disk. A Fusion Mac needs both of its drives, labelled. A RAID or a server sends its member disks only, numbered by bay, with the front of the chassis photographed first. Flash soldered onto a mainboard, as on Apple Silicon Macs and many thin laptops, cannot be taken in at all, and neither can phones or tablets.
