The Motor That Could Not Turn

A retired couple in Shepshed had a Seagate external bought around 2012 that held the photographs from three decades of family life, most of them scanned from prints by their daughter one winter. It had been used perhaps twice a year and lived in a cupboard the rest of the time. Switched on last month it beeped, and then it did nothing at all, and it has not made a sound since beyond that first attempt.

Reading the fault

Bonding is not the same as damage, and the difference decides the job. A parked head sits against a smooth surface, and over years the lubricant between them can behave like a very weak adhesive. The drive then has everything it needs except movement. Nothing is broken at that point, and freeing the heads takes minutes, which is why the important thing an owner can do is stop before something does break.

Repeated switching on is what breaks it. Each attempt applies torque to a stationary stack of platters with the heads stuck to them. Do that often enough and the arms bend or the sliders tear away, at which point the job stops being a ten-minute release and becomes a head transplant with a real risk of surface damage. The couple tried it twice and then rang, which is the reason the surfaces came back unmarked.

Rare use is worse than constant use, not better. People assume a drive kept in a cupboard is being looked after. In practice, a drive used weekly is a drive whose heads are unparked often enough that nothing settles, and a drive used twice a year spends fifty weeks at rest. This is one of the few faults where the careful owner is at more risk than the careless one.

Scanned photographs are frequently the only version left. The prints they were made from had been distributed among relatives and some had been thrown out afterwards. That makes the drive the original rather than the copy, which is worth recognising while the drive is still working: anything scanned once and then discarded needs a second copy from the day it is made.

It was not plugged in. One profiled start on a current-limited supply showed current rising and holding at the limit with no step down to a running speed, which is a stall rather than a dead motor or a failed circuit, and the enclosure was set aside as innocent.

Opened under laminar flow, the heads were resting on the platters and came clear on a ramp tool without resistance. Turned by hand afterwards, the mechanism ran freely and both surfaces were clean under the microscope with no rings or witness marks. Reassembled and powered, the drive readied first time and imaged on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA with no weak regions at all. R-Studio parsed the volume and a sample of photographs from each decade was opened on screen before the set was written to fresh media.

Everything came back, including a folder of scans nobody had remembered making. The copy went out on a new disk and the couple were talked through keeping a second one elsewhere, because a single drive in a cupboard is a single point of failure however carefully it is stored.

One disk is £300 + VAT. Opening a drive is mechanical work and sits outside the published guarantee, so 50% of the figure was settled before the lid came off and the balance once the photographs had been looked through.

A drive that beeps once and then nothing

Switch it off and leave it off. The beep means the motor has been told to turn and has not, and the only thing repeated attempts achieve is putting more force through a mechanism that is already held fast. Do not tap it on the desk, do not put it in the freezer, and do not run it upright in the hope that gravity helps; none of those release bonded heads and all of them can turn a simple release into a head replacement. Send the enclosure whole with its cable rather than opening the case yourself. If the drive has spent most of its life in a cupboard, say so, because storage history genuinely changes what the bench expects to find when it opens it.

The published figures run: £250 + VAT for a memory card, a USB stick or a pen drive; £300 + VAT for any one hard drive or SSD, NVMe included; £400 + VAT for a recorder disk or a BitLocker volume; from £500 + VAT for an array, a NAS or a server; and £800 + VAT for a forensic investigation that ends in a written report. Five bands, all of them public, and the only one outside the guarantee is the forensic work. On packing: if the storage is screwed inside a laptop, a tower, a Mac or a server, take it out and send the bare unit, because dismantling equipment is not work this bench does. Three things go the other way and travel complete — an external drive in its own case, a NAS, and a WD My Passport or My Book with its cable, since on those the key sits on the bridge rather than the disk. A Fusion Mac needs both of its drives, labelled. A RAID or a server sends its member disks only, numbered by bay, with the front of the chassis photographed first. Flash soldered onto a mainboard, as on Apple Silicon Macs and many thin laptops, cannot be taken in at all, and neither can phones or tablets.
