A smallholding at Barrow-upon-Soar keeps its herd records, movement licences and a long run of photographs on an external drive that has been in use since the children were small. The cable had grown wobbly over the years and eventually the socket itself came away, dropping out of the case. There is now nothing to plug into. A socket is held on by a few pads and a couple of tabs, and that is all. It is soldered to a thin board and takes the whole leverage of a cable every time somebody catches it with a sleeve. Years of that lifts the pads, the tracks behind them break, and one day the whole thing comes out in the hand. It is a common ending for a drive that has lived on a windowsill or a kitchen table.
The storage never knew about any of it. The socket, the bridge board and the disk are three separate things in one case. What broke was the first of them, and neither of the other two was affected. This is the reason a broken connector, which looks catastrophic to an owner holding two pieces, is one of the more straightforward faults there is.
There are two routes in, and which one applies is decided by looking. The socket can be rebuilt, pads bridged with fine wire under a microscope, and the drive read through it. Or the disk can be taken out of the enclosure and read on its own connector, ignoring the broken part completely. Older cases with a separate bridge board allow the second, which is quicker and touches less; the newer style, where the interface is built onto the disk's own board, allows only the first.
The temptation to hold the cable in place is the thing to resist. People discover that pressing a broken socket at the right angle gets a few seconds of connection, and try to copy their material off in bursts. That flexing is what finishes the remaining tracks, and an intermittent contact across a supply rail can take the board with it. Two minutes of that can convert a straightforward repair into board work.
The case came apart to establish which of the two routes applied. Under magnification the socket had gone entirely, two pads with it, and the board underneath was otherwise clean with no scorching or corrosion. The disk inside was a standard drive with an ordinary connector, sitting behind a separate bridge, which settled the question.
It was read directly on its own interface behind a write blocker, with the enclosure and its broken socket left out of the process altogether. The disk profiled healthy, imaged in one pass, and R-Studio parsed the volume from the image. Movement licences and a spread of photographs were opened before anything was written out.
The records came back whole, along with about fifteen years of photographs that had accumulated on the same drive without anyone planning it. The recovered material went out on a new disk. The old enclosure was not repaired, on the grounds that nobody needed a case that had already failed once.
One disk is £300 + VAT, and it is the same figure whether the fault is at the socket or on the platters. Work on a board is electronic and the published exclusion names it, so 50% of the figure was payable before the work started, with the balance falling due once the paperwork had been checked.
Stop trying to make contact. Holding a cable at an angle, wedging it, or taping it in place is how the last surviving track goes, and an intermittent connection can short across the supply while it is being attempted. Do not have the socket glued back, since adhesive on the pads makes a proper repair harder, and do not let a general repair shop solder it back unless they can also tell you what is behind it. Keep the socket itself if it is still in the case and send it in the same bag, because knowing which pads it came off saves time. Send the whole enclosure with any loose pieces rather than opening it yourself, and mention how old it is, since the age determines whether the disk can simply be read on its own connector or whether the socket has to be rebuilt first.
Each of these is a real enquiry, taken from a household or a business somewhere in Leicester or the surrounding county, with the name of the customer, the firm and anything else that would identify them taken out. What is left is the reasoning: what turned up, what had actually failed inside it, the method that fault required and the equipment it was worked on.
