Three Old Disks, Three Separate Jobs

The clerk of a parish council near Great Glen inherited a cupboard along with the post: three old hard disks, none larger than 500GB, holding minutes going back to the 1990s, the village photographic archive and the accounts nobody has been able to open since the last clerk retired. Each disk had been tried and each had refused in its own way. What the council wanted was straightforward — everything on one new disk that a Mac in the village hall could read.

Reading the fault

Cannot access is not a diagnosis, it is a description of the desk. The three disks failed for three unconnected reasons, which is what usually happens with a drawer of old storage rather than one fault repeating. Any quotation given before each has been read on its own would be a guess, and any price given for the set as a whole would be a guess multiplied by three.

Age is not what stops an old disk being read. A drive from the late 1990s uses an interface that no current motherboard carries and a capacity a modern machine will not think about twice, but the recorded material is as legible as it ever was. What defeats people is the connector and the software, both of which are bench problems. One of these three had been declared dead by three different family members and had nothing wrong with it whatever.

A dead caddy is the happiest possible answer. The third disk had been mounted in an external case for a decade. The case's interface board had failed, and since the disk only ever appeared through that board, the disk was assumed to have failed with it. Out of the case and onto a bench interface, it read at full speed and gave up its contents in one pass with no repair of any kind.

Firmware repair is logical work, and that matters to the bill. The second disk was not reporting its own capacity, because a module in its reserved area had become unreadable. Rebuilding that module is done with the drive shut, without a soldering iron and without opening anything, so it sits with deletions and damaged file systems rather than with head replacement, and it keeps the published guarantee. People assume anything with the word firmware in it is the expensive end of the trade. It is not.

The disks were worked in the order they were least likely to be readable, so that the worst news would arrive first. The one with the damaged partition structure imaged cleanly and was rebuilt from the copy, with the tree walking again inside an afternoon.

The disk that would not report itself was addressed through its service area, where the unreadable module was rebuilt from what remained of the drive's own tables. It then identified correctly, imaged at reduced speed, and was left alone afterwards rather than being handed back as a working disk, since a drive that has needed that is not one to keep using.

The third came out of its caddy and read as though nothing had ever been wrong with it, which was the case. All three images were parsed, the material sorted by disk so the council could see what came from where, and the result written to one new disk in a format both village machines can read.

The minutes came back complete from 1997 onwards, along with about nine thousand photographs and the accounts, which turned out to be in a spreadsheet format old enough to need converting before anybody could read them. That conversion was done as part of the handover, since a recovered file nobody can open is not a recovery.

Each disk is its own job at £300 + VAT, and three disks are three of those figures rather than a package. All three faults were logical, nothing was opened and no circuit was worked on, so all three ran under no fix, no fee, and the disk that proved healthy was returned with nothing charged for it at all.

Send them together and expect them to be quoted separately, because each one is a different fault until it has been read. Do not power them up repeatedly to check which still spin, since an old disk that has sat still for years is at its most vulnerable on the first few starts and testing is exactly what spends them. If a disk lives in an external case, leave it in the case rather than pulling it out, since the case may be the whole fault and it is quicker to establish that on a bench than at home. Say what you want at the end of it, too. Recovering to a single new disk in a format that opens on the machines you actually own is part of the job, and it is easier to arrange at the start than after everything has been written out.

So a deletion, a broken file system, a lost partition, a firmware or service-area repair all keep the guarantee — nothing comes back, nothing is owed. Opening a drive under laminar flow, rebuilding a board, lifting a memory chip, or anything that arrived wet or burnt does not: half the agreed figure is taken before the work, and the balance only if your files come home. The published figures run: £250 + VAT for a memory card, a USB stick or a pen drive; £300 + VAT for any one hard drive or SSD, NVMe included; £400 + VAT for a recorder disk or a BitLocker volume; from £500 + VAT for an array, a NAS or a server; and £800 + VAT for a forensic investigation that ends in a written report. Five bands, all of them public, and the only one outside the guarantee is the forensic work. On packing: if the storage is screwed inside a laptop, a tower, a Mac or a server, take it out and send the bare unit, because dismantling equipment is not work this bench does. Three things go the other way and travel complete — an external drive in its own case, a NAS, and a WD My Passport or My Book with its cable, since on those the key sits on the bridge rather than the disk. A Fusion Mac needs both of its drives, labelled. A RAID or a server sends its member disks only, numbered by bay, with the front of the chassis photographed first. Flash soldered onto a mainboard, as on Apple Silicon Macs and many thin laptops, cannot be taken in at all, and neither can phones or tablets. Each of these is a real enquiry, taken from a household or a business somewhere in Leicester or the surrounding county, with the name of the customer, the firm and anything else that would identify them taken out. What is left is the reasoning: what turned up, what had actually failed inside it, the method that fault required and the equipment it was worked on.
