Beeping means a motor that will not turn rather than a verdict on your files, and a unit that never appears has more often lost the electronics in its case than anything inside the disk. Under the aluminium is a standard Seagate or Toshiba mechanism, and it is that mechanism which comes out and goes onto the bench.

LaCie sells to people who work away from a desk, and equipment that travels collects the knocks that travelling involves. Six patterns cover nearly everything the brand posts to Cambridge, and the first of them generates more calls than the other five put together.
What you can hear is a spindle motor trying to start, giving up, resting and going round again. Bearings that have seized account for a fair share of it, and heads stuck fast to the platter surface for most of the rest. Neither has the slightest connection to the power arriving, so a fresh lead or a larger adaptor changes nothing at all.
The orange sleeve protects a case rather than the sealed assembly hanging inside it. If the platters were turning at the moment of impact, the heads have touched the surface, and every subsequent attempt to read the drive works that contact a little deeper.
Electronics wrapped around a drive wear out sooner than the drive does. Bridge chips, sockets and mains circuitry all fail early. An unlit, silent d2 or Porsche Design unit very often turns out to be nothing worse than a dead enclosure with an entirely healthy disk behind it.
Across much of the current range the USB electronics are built onto the drive's own circuit board instead of a separate card behind it. Take the shell off one of those and no standard connector appears, which is where home remedies stop: the mechanism can only be reached through the interface it was manufactured with.
The two-disk desktop units shipped configurable, either striped for speed or mirrored for safety. Striped, one dead member silences the volume, since half a stripe reassembles into nothing usable. Either way both disks make the journey together.
The light comes on, the disk sounds perfectly normal, and the machine responds by offering to initialise the volume instead of opening it. That is a damaged file system on sound hardware. It is the cheapest class of LaCie job and the only one here that keeps no fix, no fee.
Begin with the single most useful fact about the brand, which is that LaCie has not built a disk mechanism in its life. The company has belonged to Seagate for years, and behind almost every enclosure is a standard Seagate or Toshiba drive with a model number you could look up over lunch. What LaCie sells is the industrial design, the aluminium and the rubber. The storage inside is the same storage everybody else uses, and that is good news for a recovery, because it means a failed unit is treated exactly like any other drive of that model with the same donor stock behind it.
It also frames the only question that matters at the start. When one of these stops working, the fault lies either in the packaging or in the disk. Packaging faults — the bridge board, the USB socket, the mains circuitry on a desktop model — are common, and where that is the trouble the disk behind it is untouched and the job stays logical and cheap. Disk faults, meaning heads, motor, firmware or sectors going soft across the platters, want filtered air, donor parts and the hours those take. Separating the two is most of what the free diagnostic does, and it happens before a figure is committed to anything.
A beeping LaCie is running a retry loop loudly enough for a human to hear. Power arrives, the spindle is instructed to turn, the platters refuse, the drive stands down and tries again about a second later. Each cycle produces one beep. Two faults generate that rhythm with any regularity: bearings that have gummed up, which is what a drive parked in a drawer for a year or knocked hard against a wall eventually does, and a head stack that has settled onto the platter surface and adhered to it, which is what a running portable does to itself when dropped.
Neither of those faults is electrical, which is why the usual home remedies all miss. Another lead, a different port, a powered hub, a bigger adaptor: not one of them frees a seized spindle or releases a bonded head, and each additional retry asks a jammed assembly to fight itself. The remedy is mechanical and it happens behind filtered air. The lid is removed, the heads are lifted clear on a comb made for that family of drives, and either the original mechanism turns again or the platters move into a donor body that does. Once the drive runs steadily it is copied sector by sector, and your files come out of the copy rather than off the patient.
Complete silence belongs in a separate category and should not be lumped in here. A mains-powered d2 or 2big with no light, no sound and no beeping has generally lost its power supply or its bridge board, and everything on the disk inside is intact.
Older units do come apart to reveal a plain SATA disk, which is why half the internet still recommends doing exactly that. On a good many current LaCie and Seagate portables the USB bridge is fabricated onto the drive's own board, so taking the shell off exposes no standard connector at all — the interface and the drive are one component. When such a board fails, a donor board on its own is often insufficient too, because the bridge carries the translation that makes the media legible and, on certain models, a key tied to that individual unit. Those jobs recover perfectly well with the right tooling and not at all in a caddy from a high street. Any guide that tells you to open a modern portable and plug the disk into your computer has not held one lately.
The d2 is the tall mains-powered single-disk unit that stands behind a monitor for six years without comment and then one day does not start. More often than not the fault is the enclosure or its power supply rather than the disk behind it. The 2big carries two disks and shipped configurable, so the opening question about one is always how it was set up. Striped, a single dead member takes the volume with it. Mirrored, whatever the survivor holds is the ceiling. Both disks make the journey either way, and a 2big is quoted as an array from £500 + VAT.
The Rugged is the orange-cased portable that lives in a camera bag, and on its own it generates more physical damage than the rest of the catalogue put together, because the bumper looks after the shell rather than the mechanism hanging inside it. Rugged SSD models contain nothing that moves and fail the way solid state does, which is silently, without warning and all at once. Porsche Design units are the plain aluminium desktop and mobile drives, and of the whole range they are the likeliest to turn up as a dead bridge with a perfectly sound Seagate behind it. The older Blade and slim mobile drives are thin shells wrapped round ordinary 2.5-inch disks, and they click for the same unremarkable reasons any 2.5-inch disk clicks.

Very little of this work is handed over in person. It arrives as a parcel, which suits hardware that has already stopped behaving: boxed, padded and insured is a gentler seventy miles than the M1 in a glovebox. The general rule is the drive travels and the machine stays behind — out of the laptop, out of the tower, out of the iMac, out of the recorder under the counter. This bench does not dismantle equipment, and a repair shop will do it while you wait. Three things are the other way round, and getting them wrong costs you the recovery: an external drive stays sealed in its own case, a NAS comes as a complete unit, and a WD My Passport or My Book travels whole with its cable, because on those the encryption key is held on the bridge board rather than on the disk — separate the two and the data becomes unreadable even to us. A Fusion Mac needs both of its drives, each labelled. The one thing nobody can work round is flash soldered onto the mainboard, as on Apple Silicon machines: if it will not come off, there is nothing to post.
